Solar for rural Moray
Inland Speyside and the wider Moray countryside have a high proportion of rural properties — farmhouses, cottages, estates, holiday lets and off-grid homes. These properties often have larger roofs, more exposed sites and, in some cases, no mains gas supply. Solar and battery storage are well suited to rural Moray, where generation can offset electricity and, in some cases, oil heating costs.
Off-grid and oil-heated homes
Some rural Moray properties are off-grid or rely on oil heating. A solar and battery system can reduce running costs by generating and storing electricity on site. For off-grid properties, a larger battery and optional backup generation can form part of a standalone energy setup. We assess your current supply and usage to design an appropriate system.
Estates and large rural properties
Estates across Moray often have multiple buildings — main house, holiday cottages, estate offices and outbuildings — each with different energy use. We can design systems that span multiple roofs or use ground-mount arrays, with battery storage to balance generation and use across the site.
Holiday lets and tourism
Moray's tourism sector includes holiday lets, B&Bs and small hospitality venues, many in rural locations. Solar and battery storage can reduce the electricity costs of guest accommodation, particularly where occupancy is seasonal and aligns with longer summer days.
Exposed rural sites
At around 57.6°N Moray is far north, so summer days are very long and winter days short. Coastal sites along the Moray Firth need wind- and salt-rated fixings. Rural sites in Speyside can also be exposed to wind, so we specify appropriate fixings and mounting systems. Our MCS-certified partners assess your roof structure and exposure as part of the survey.
Planning for rural properties
Solar on most homes is permitted development in Scotland; listed buildings and conservation areas need consent — check with Moray Council. Many rural Moray properties are listed or within conservation areas, so consent may be required. Ground-mount arrays may also need planning permission. Check with Moray Council before proceeding.
